Builtboy:
The Man Behind the Best Bodies of the Beauty Queen Biz (cont.)

My heart goes into
every client when I’m working with her as though she was
my one and only client in the world. When it’s time to morph
those notes into a program, I usually listen to the soundtrack
to Star Wars or Gladiator. It helps me see her
program as her secret weapon in her ‘swimsuit showdown.’
My clients are so well adjusted, that even if the outcome isn’t
as favorable as we hoped, she’s content because she has
learned how to properly fuel her body with safe, sound nutrition
and how to be efficient and effective with her workouts. In the
end, it’s just the opinion of 5-7 people put on a panel
to judge anyway.”

Built 2 Win was created to fill a void in the fitness industry. After
reading about contestants being rushed to the hospital from dehydration
and malnutrition during a state pageant's event, he created a screen
name, “Builtboy,” and started offering advice to pageant
contestants who were lost and confused about the correct way to go about
achieving a healthy appearance.
“I started receiving notes from contestants everywhere, as far
away as Hawaii, asking for help. It seemed as though the only resources
that were available were men and women that were neither properly educated,
nor were they effectively able to address some of the common issues
and concerns regarding women’s bodies. The wheels started turning
and I thought that I’d start responding and doing my best to help
them.”
As the e-mails poured in, he learned that one trainer instructed a
promising client to “only work on the front of the body. That’s
the only side of you the judges are going to see if you walk right on
stage.” The result caused imbalances in her musculature and postural
problems.
A teen contestant’s mother wrote to Popovics since “Builtboy”
had stressed the importance of nutrition. She turned to him for help
after her daughter’s “pageant trainer” scoffed off
requests to take a closer look at her food choices, explaining that
as a teenager, nutrition wasn’t really that important because
of her high metabolism.

| Can 4 weeks really make
a difference? Here's proof- the same young lady after a 4-week Emergency
Body Blast program. |
But the worst of the batch, according to a current Built 2 Win client,
was a well-known trainer in the pageant circle who kept churning out
the same, dated, at-home workout program for every girl. There was no
strength training for the lower half of the body and none of the workouts
that he sold were customized to address specific concerns. “What
made it worse was that there was no interaction or communication after
he was paid for the program. No phone calls, no sit-down discussions
to evaluate progress, nothing. He’s done much more harm than good,”
she says with irritation.
Justin adds, looking at his statuesque client “It’s ridiculous
that this is what girls have had out there to ‘help them.’
If someone has just had rotator cuff surgery, scoliosis or other ailment,
you need to address that during your program design. It’s laziness,
a lack of true interest and completely unacceptable. There was clearly
a need for a trustworthy, caring personal trainer that specialized in
women’s bodies and I was going to meet that need.”
