Is Body for Life for real?

Question: Years ago, I read a book by Bill Phillips called Body For Life. In his book, he advocates doing your workout fist thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Furthermore, he advises not to eat for at least 45 minutes after your workout.

The theory he advocates is supposed to lead to more fat-burning. Is this true? I have been following this advice, my goals are to burn fat and gain muscle. I do cardio then I lift in the morning. Is this counter-productive? What is the truth behind this?
