CHILEAN charmer Hil Yesenia Hernandez Escobar romped away with the title of Miss Earth 2006, a Swarovski-encrusted crown and more than $20,000 in prizes during Sunday night’s pageant held at the National Museum grounds in Manila. The pageant was supposed to be held in Chile this year but because of setbacks, organizer Carousel Productions decided to hold it again in the country. Hernandez, a 5-foot-9-inch stunner, beat 81 other contestants to be the planet’s newest environmental advocate. The Miss Earth contest promotes environmental preservation and contestants are called “beauties for a cause.” Organizers tout the Philippine-born pageant as the third biggest in the world, next only to the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants. The country’s representative, Catherine Untalan, won second-runner up and the title Miss Water. Named Miss Air (second place) was Miss India Amita Pakri (who received the Best in Evening Gown award), while Miss Philippines Catherine Untalan was named Miss Water (third place). Miss Venezuela Marianne Puglia Martinez was named Miss Fire (fourth place) (who also received the Best in Swimsuit award). Rounding up the Top 8 were Czech Petra Soukupova and Miss Universe veterans Francys Sudnicka of Poland, Stefanie de Roux of Panama and Meriam George of Egypt. China’s Zhou Mei Ting won Miss Talent and made it to the 16 semifinals. Also among the Top 16 were delegates from the Slovak Republic, Saint Lucia, France, Bosnia, Herzegovina, the Bahamas and United States. Heavy favorite Riza Santos of Canada, whose parents are Filipinos, was voted by mediamen as Miss Photogenic but failed to advance to the semifinals. Samoa’s Mililani Tofa was Best in National Costume while Italy’s Maria Lucia Leo won Miss Friendship. Veteran television presenter Ariel Oreta hosted the program along with 2004 Miss Earth Priscilla Meirelles of Brazil and 2005 Miss Philippines-Air Ginger Conejero.
