The America's Junior Miss pageant took place June 26, 2010 in Mobile, Alabama.

The reigning America's Junior Miss 2009 Michelle Rogers will be on hand to crown her sucessor.

Madison Denise Leonard, the first Distinguished Young Woman of America, recalled the moment Saturday night when the program's 2010 winner was about to be announced.  Madison is a recent graduate of Coeur d'Alene High School and will attend Pepperdine University to study journalism in the fall. She won a total of $41,000 in cash scholarships during tonight's competition.

The 18-year-old from Idaho said she wasn't expecting to hear her name called.

"I was so excited for the runners-up," said Leonard, who ranked among the show's 10 finalists. "They're some of my best friends here. I was so proud of them, and I didn't expect to win at all."

When "Idaho!" rang out, the crowd roared, and Leonard's hand flew to her mouth in astonishment. Her eyes shone as she stepped forward to receive her winner's medallion.

She walked away with $41,000 in scholarship from the national competition and $9,100 from her state and local competitions. For her talent, the Hayden Lake resident serenaded an enthralled crowd Friday night while playing piano and singing a soulful, sincere rendition of "The Nearness of You" by Hoagy Carmichael.

Leonard used the competition's self-expression portion to voice her optimism about using the educational and economic opportunities the U.S. offers to better herself and those around her. She plans on pursuing music performance and journalism and attending Pepperdine University.

Meredith Gaufin of Utah was named first runner-up Saturday night, receiving $29,000 in scholarships. Second runner-up was South Carolina's Anna Bryce Flowe, who was awarded $16,000 in scholarships. The remaining seven contestants in the 10 finalists' division each received $3,000 scholarships.
