Click here for pictures of the event! The 2010 Miss Universe pageant took place on Monday, August 23, 2010 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada USA. The reigning Miss Universe 2009, Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela, was on hand to crown her successor. The pageant, in its 59th year, was hosted by rock musician Bret Michaels and NBC TV news personality Natalie Morales, who also co-hosted the 2010 Miss USA pageant in May.
Ximena Navarrete, a 22-year-old model from Mexico, was named Miss Universe 2010, extending Latin America's domination of the pageant to three consecutive years.
Navarrete, a nature enthusiast from Guadalajara, the capital city of the Mexican state Jalisco, revealed earlier in the competition that she wanted to work with women who suffer from eating disorders.
"I studied nutrition and I would like everyone to understand that it is not about your looks it is how you feel inside," the 5-foot-nine (1.75-meter) brunette said through an interpreter. "And when you feel good inside you look good."
She becomes the second Mexican to win the Miss Universe crown, following María Guadalupe (Lupita) Jones Garay in 1991, who, coincidently, was also crowned in Las Vegas.
The first runner-up was Miss Jamaica, Yendi Phillipps, a graduate of State University of New York at Brockport, NY; while Miss Australia, Jesinta Campbell, was chosen second runner-up. Miss Ukraine, Anna Poslavska was third runner-up, while Miss Philippines, Maria Venus Bayonito Raj was selected as fourth runner-up.
Also placing among the ten semi-finaliasts were: Miss Ireland, Rozanna Purcell; Miss Albania, Anxhela Martini; Miss Puerto Rico, Mariana Paola Vicente Morales; Miss South Africa Nicole Flint; and Miss Guatemala, Alejandra Barillas.
Rounding out the top fifteen were: Miss Belgium, Cilou Annys; Miss France, Malika Menard; Miss Russia, Irina Antonenko; Miss Colombia, Natalia Navarro Galvis; and Miss Czech Republic, Jitka Válková.
Miss Thailand, Fonthip Watcharatrakul won two of the premier awards, that of Miss Photogenic and Best National Costume. Miss Australia, Jesinta Campbell was voted by her fellow delegates as Miss Congeniality.
