Click here for pictures of the event! The 58th Annual Miss USA pageant was held April 19, 2009, at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The reigning Miss USA 2008 Crystle Stewart of Texas was on hand to crown her successor.
Miss North Carolina USA Kristen Dalton was crowned Miss USA 2009 on Sunday, beating out 50 other beauty queens in the live pageant televised from Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
The 22-year-old aspiring motivational speaker and entertainer from Wilmington edged out first runner-up Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, of San Diego, second runner-up Miss Arizona USA Alicia-Monique Blanco, of Phoenix, third runner up Miss Utah Laura Chukanov of Salt Lake City, and fourth runner up Miss Kentucky Maria Elizabeth Montgomery of Dnaville.
"It feels really natural," Dalton said of her win. "I've worked so be here and this has been my lifelong dream and it's finally here. And whoever knew you could win in a turquoise gown?"
Kristen was also the high score in both swimsuit and evening gown.
The ladies who made the cut to top ten were Miss Arkansas Chanley Painter of Conway; Miss West Virginia Jessi Pierson of Milton, who was also selected Miss Photogenic; Miss Tennessee Kristen Motil; Miss Texas Brooke Daniels of Houston; and Miss South Carolina Stephanie Smith of Goose Creek.
Also making the top fifteen semifinalsts were: Miss Connecticut Monica Mary Pietrzak of Manchester; Miss Idaho Melissa Weber of Boise; Miss Georgia Kimberly Ann Gittings of Lilburn; Miss Minensota Erica Nego of Plymouth; and Miss Virginia Maegan Phillips of Quantico.
The top 15 contestants worked the stage in white string bikinis designed by pop star Jessica Simpson's swimwear line. Rocker Kevin Rudolf performed his song "Let it Rock," followed by The Veronicas, who performed their single "Untouched" as the top 10 beauties showed off their choice of glittering evening gowns.
Dalton's was a flowing, blue Grecian number that stood out among a series of white gowns.
Her title comes with a year's use of a New York apartment, a public relations team, a two-year scholarship at the New York Film Academy and an undisclosed salary.
Voted Miss Congeniality by the delegates was Miss Wyoming Cynthia Pate.

The judges are: Robert Earl, owner and co-chairman of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino; Miss USA 2004 and television presenter, Shandi Finnessey; co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Willie Geist; President of Entertainment, MTV Networks Music Channels, Brian Graden; star of “Days of our Lives,” Shelley Hennig; the internet’s most notorious celebrity gossip columnist Perez Hilton; “Access Hollywood” contributor and KVBC News Entertainment reporter Alicia Jacobs; “Deal or No Deal” model and star of “The Celebrity Apprentice,” Claudia Jordan; John Miller,Chief Marketing Officer, NBC Universal; Kelly Monaco, season one celebrity winner of “Dancing With the Stars,”; comedian and cast member of “Saturday Night Live,” Kenan Thompson and Eric Trump, Executive Vice President, Development & Acquisitions of The Trump Organization.
Musical Entertainment
Producer and recording artist Kevin Rudolf will perform his chart-topping single “Let It Rock” during the swimsuit competition of the live telecast, and the pop star duo, The Veronicas, will perform their hit song “Untouched” during the evening gown competition.
New Crown
In addition, the Miss USA telecast will kick-off “Green Week” and promote NBC Universal’s campaign, “Green is Universal” in order to promote the importance of environmental awareness across the globe. In keeping with this initiative, Diamond Nexus Labs, the official jewelry sponsor for the Miss Universe Organization, has created an eco-friendly, custom-designed crown for Miss USA 2009.

Kristen is the is sister of Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2008, and daughter of Miss North Carolina USA 1982. She was also the 1st runner up at Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2005.
