Four-time Miss Wisconsin dies in motorcycle accident
A Union Grove High School teacher not only will live on through her students, but also her gift of tissue donation. Kristin Robbie Tielens Novaez, 36, who worked as a choral teacher at Union Grove High School in Union Grove, Wisconsin, died Sunday, October 9, 2011, a night after a motorcycle crash in Kenosha County that also killed her husband, David A. Novaez, 48, of Wheatland, Wis., also a teacher. He taught German at Central High School in Westosha, Wis. They were married in December of 2003. Novaez was a four-time Miss Wisconsin contestant who promoted organ and tissue donation during her Miss Wisconsin pageant attempts. "Her organs couldn't be donated, but her tissue will" said her mother, Barbara Tielens of Oconto. "That donation could help up to 60 people. But as of Monday, she didn't know if David Novaez's organs were donated". "Her organs were so badly damaged," Union Grove District Administrator Al Mollerskov explained.
Tielens Novaez, classical pianist and Oconto, Wis. native, was a contestant in the 1995 Miss Green Bay pageant in 1995, and in 1996 she won the Miss Northeastern Wisconsin title in Marinette. She placed fourth runner-up to Miss Wisconsin 1996. In 1997, she was fourth runner-up again competing as Miss Oshkosh while also a student at UW-Oshkosh. In 1998, she won the state at-large Miss Southeastern Wisconsin pageant in Racine and later placed among the ten semi-finalists in the 1998 Miss Wisconsin pageant in Oshkosh. A year later, after winning the state open Miss Eastern Shore crown in Milwaukee, she was named second runner-up to Miss Wisconsin. Kristin is only one of about a dozen women in the state to have competed in the Miss Wisconsin pageant four times in state pageant history. No contestant has competed five times for the state title.

The Miss America Organization and ABC announced today that Chris Harrison will host the “2012 Miss America Pageant” live telecast from the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 2012 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on ABC. Harrison was co-host of ABC’s live telecast of the 2011 Miss America Pageant with Brooke Burke. The 2011 pageant drew ABC’s biggest non-sports audience in the timeslot since April 2009, reaching 14.6 million viewers nationwide. He first hosted the iconic broadcast on ABC in 2004.
“It is an honor to come back and host Miss America for my third time and second year in a row,” said Harrison. “Hosting Miss America is one of the most iconic hosting jobs in television so I am of course thrilled to once again be at the helm. I was extremely pleased to see the pageant return to network TV last year with so much success and I was happy to be a small part of that.”
Harrison began his television career by covering local sports in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and quickly ventured into entertainment television. In 1999, Harrison landed the job as host of HGTV's Designer's Challenge, which was one of the network's highest rated shows. In 2001 he became host of ABC's hit romance/reality series The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. Harrison also hosts ABC's reality show, Bachelor Pad, an all-star reunion from previous seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, which premiered its second season on August 8. Harrison continues to advance in the entertainment industry through a variety of professional endeavors.
He has hosted the live television coverage of the final championship rounds of The 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee on ABC, co-hosted ABC's 2008 American Music Awards Red Carpet Live!, and hosted Road to the 60th Primetime Emmy ® Awards, ABC.com's daily coverage leading up to the 2008 Primetime Emmy Awards.
In Loving Memory of Miss America 1943 Jean Bartel
Submitted by: Miss America Org.
It is with such great sadness we inform you of the passing of one of our most beloved Miss Americas, Miss America 1943 Jean Bartel. Jean passed away on Sunday evening and although, she has passed, she will live forever in our hearts.
We were so very proud and privileged to have Jean join us for our 90th anniversary celebration of the Miss America pageant in January and will cherish those moments that we had to spend with her. From her participation in the events to her love and support of the program, Jean will always have a very special place in our hearts and this organization that she loved and served so well.
In 1943 Jean took the commitment of a "War-Time" Miss America to heart, she embarked on a Bond-selling tour that would result in her being honored by the United States Treasury Department as the individual who had sold the most Series E Bonds that year. Jean was instrumental in posing the idea that Miss America should be awarded a college scholarship which has remained the hallmark of the Miss America Organization.
After serving her year as Miss America, Jean's remarkable talent enabled her to embark on a singing career, which included work on radio and television, two South American tours, the Middle East, Europe, Canada, and in every State of the Union but Maine. Ultimately, her dream became a reality when Jean became the first Miss America to star in a Broadway musical- "Of Thee I Sing"- opposite Jack Carson.
Over the years, Jean has continued to be a great supporter of The Miss America Organization. She was a remarkable Miss America and a dedicated individual - committed to our Organization and has forever touched our hearts. We offer our condolences and prayers to Jean’s family, her friends and especially to her Miss America sisters who she treasured so dearly.
