Moisture again arrived in Williston, Saturday evening following the cities
.06 inches from the heavens, when a quickly teary eyed Ashley Jo Ford,
a Cavalier ND lady, was crowned Miss North Dakota 2005.
Ashley, who entered the state pageant as Miss Potato Queen seized the honor
from among 19 other contestants vying for the coveted title. Ashley won a swimsuit
preliminary and sang "There You Are" for the talent competition. This
was her first attempt at the title.
"It
is slowing starting to sink in that I am the new Miss North Dakota. I'm very
excited and honored to represent the state of North Dakota. I can't wait to
start making appearances and getting to the know the people of our great state."
said Ford. "It is a dream come true, I have wanted this since I was a little
girl." Ford said smiling.
"I am actually the 3rd generation in our family to compete in pageants.
My grandma was in the very first Potato Queen Pageant, and my aunt was Miss
North Dakota 1983." Ford continued. "My mom also formerly held the
same preliminary title that I held coming into the pageant. She was in the Miss
North Dakota pageant in 1976."
Miss
Fargo Jacqueline Johnson, 18, earned first runner-up.
She also garnered first place in Friday's swimwear competition and won the Jean
Stuteville Memorial Award for interview. Johnson will be attending Gustavus
Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., in the fall.
Second runner-up went to Katie Weaver, Miss Northern
Plains Dancer, of Minot. Weaver, 18, danced her way to a top finish in
Friday's talent competition with a jazzy performance to "Rack 'Em Up."
She will be a freshman at North Dakota State University.
Miss Peace Garden Kristin Dannewitz, 22, received
third runner-up. Dannewitz received a bachelor of arts in religion and a minor
in management studies from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. She recently
graduated with a master's in organizational studies from Minot State University.
Fourth runner-up was Miss Grand Forks Azure Moser,
19. Moser is a physical therapy major at the University of North Dakota.
The
remaining semi-finalists:were: Miss Lake Agassiz Sarah Anderson;
Miss Williston Tina Domagala, (4th RU last year);
Miss Fort Abercrombie Nalia Hegge, (5th RU last year);
Miss Red River Valley Lisa Houle; and Miss Hard
Spring Wheat Renae Van Berkom.
Non-finalist talent winners, Miss NDSCS Stacy Mauch and Miss Dakota Territory
Bethany Nesheim both performed during the final night of competition. Mauch
got some toes tapping with an upbeat piano solo, "Root Beer Rag,"
and Nesheim performed her self-composed vocal number, "Took a While."
"It
was another wonderful event full of spectacular entertainment and we are so
excited about having Ashley Ford represent our state this coming year."
said board member Marilyn McGinley. McGinley has been with the pageant board
for 18 years and its president for 10 years. "The showing of support in
Williston has just been awesome since the pageant moved here (Williston) in
1987." said McGinley.
Guest performers and contestants again dished out the works. The pageant showcased
scores of North Dakota's different talents such as vocal solos, jazz, pointé,
and tap dances, Spanish Ballét piano, violin, flute, as well as a monologue.
The 2006 Miss North Dakota Pageant was held June 7-12, 2004 at the Williston
High School, Williston, ND. North Dakota Trivia:
North Dakota is another on the list of states that have not produced a Miss America. In fact, they have yet broken the top five ranking. They first cracked the semifinalist position when Donna Grotberg made the cut in 1977. Tina Curran returned North Dakota to the top ten again in 1989. Roxanna Saberi again cracked the top ten ranks in 1998. In 2008 Ashley Youg was named Miss Congeniality. TO ADD OR UPDATE CONTENT TO TFTJ, use the Submission
