The Miss North Dakota America pageant took place June 11-13, 2009. The reigning Miss North Dakota 2008-09 Tessie Jones was on hand to crown her successor.

And then there were two.

Miss Empire Jaci Stofferahn held Miss Red River Valley Katie Ralston in a hug as the two waited to hear who would become the next Miss North Dakota. Stofferahn’s face was barely visible, her long, blonde hair tumbling down her shoulders. Ralston’s face couldn’t be seen from the crowd as she stuck close to Stofferahn.

Suddenly, Ralston’s changed as Stofferahn was announced the first runner-up. The tall brunette turned to face the crowd and covered her face, shaking. She didn’t take her hands away from her face for the next few moments, then grinned as if she were overwhelmed while Miss North Dakota 2009 Tessie Jones crowned her.

Ralston, of Carrington, is Miss North Dakota 2010. Ralston beat out 20 other contestants for the title. During Saturday night’s Miss North Dakota Scholarship Pageant competition at Williston High School’s auditorium, she performed a humorous musical theatre vocal number called “One Hundred Easy Ways” that had the audience in stitches.

The first runner up was Jaci Stofferahn, Miss Empire; second runner up was Beth Hurt, Miss Dickinson; third runner up was Jessica Harper, Miss Peace Garden; and fourth runner up was Stephanie Richter, Miss Williams County.

The remaining semifinalists were: Elise Enerson, Miss Northern Lights; Becky Parker, Miss Fargo; Arianne Martinovich, Miss Fort Abercrombie; Serena Christianson, Miss State Capitol; and Cally Musland, Miss James River Valley.

North Dakota Trivia:

North Dakota is another on the list of states that have not produced a Miss America. In fact, they have yet broken the top five ranking. They first cracked the semifinalist position when Donna Grotberg made the cut in 1977. Tina Curran returned North Dakota to the top ten again in 1989. Roxanna Saberi again cracked the top ten ranks in 1998.

In 2008 Ashley Youg was named Miss Congeniality.
