It was a Homecoming celebration for North Carolina's first Miss USA, Chelsea Cooley of Charlotte. Chelsea was on hand to crown the next Miss North Carolina USA 2006. Held at the High Point Theater in High Point, NC. 95 Teen delegates came together to vie for the title that would eventually get them to the National stage in 2006. A"Tar Heel" native took the title of Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2006. She is 15 year old, home schooled Melissa Lingafelt of Concord. This was also her first attempt at the title, and never expected to win so quickly. She was crowned by outgoing queen, Nikkie Groat of Mathews. Melissa, 15 year-old daughter of Ken and Miki Lingafelt, is from Concord, NC. Melissa has a 21 year-old brother, Kyle, and a 9 year-old sister, MaKenzie. Ms. Lingafelt is a high school sophomore who attends classes from home. This provides her the opportunity to travel all over the country with her father. So far, Melissa has visited 44 of the 50 states. One of her favorite locations outside of New York City is Baton Rouge, LA. Ms. Lingafelt was once able to live in the heart of Cajun Country and enjoyed experiencing the rich culture of southern Louisiana. An avid reader and computer-lover, Melissa has delved into web and graphic design. Her creative abilities extend to another one of her interests: freelance make-up artistry. When not behind a computer screen or make-up brush, Ms. Lingafelt competes in singing and dancing competitions. An award-winning performer, Melissa was chosen to sing the national anthem for President George Bush at age 12. Ms. Lingafelt has participated in Student Council, Photography Club and Battle of the Books Club. She has served as secretary of the Jr. Beta Club and received three regional Young Authors awards. Melissa has volunteered with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Rocky River Elk Foundation, Relay for Life and American Cancer Society. North Carolina Trivia:
North Carolina has placed 7 times at the national Miss Teen USA pageant. The first time was when Tracey Kaggel finished as a Semifinalist at the 1984 event. The second was in 1985 when Kimberly Jordan also finished as a Semifinalist. Other semifinal finishes include Peggy Blackwell (1st ru in 1987), Holly Furman (Top 6 in 1991), Rachael Adcocks (Top 6 in 1992), Ali Burr (Top 6 in 1997); and Melissa Lingafelt (1st RU 2006 and Most Photogenic). North Carolina has received two Special Awards in addition to this successful track record. In 1991, Holly Furman won the Miss Congeniality award. 1992 Rachel Adcocks won the Miss Photogenic award.
